Pain lets itself in, I slip outside with the cat. Pain searches room to room, turns on lights, laughing at my codeine, wearing my slippers. The cat and I blink from the garden, peeking through picture windows. I stroke soft fur, listen to a purr, beyond pain’s reach for now.

Guy Biederman
