Face

I have my grandfather’s round face, his capacious
cheeks. Though he’s been dead since I was six,
I still see him in his wedding portrait, young
but bald, a trait he passed on to my son.
He’s there too in an early oil by my great-uncle,
Isaac Rosenberg, round spectacles setting off
that face, which floats, full moon, above his collar.
His death mask, rough plaster painted brown,
features strangely placid, waxes rounder
than before. We claim our faces as our own,
yet clearly, they are borrowed, pressed
and folded heirlooms in the attic of our DNA.
