—After Salvador Dalí by George Platt Lynes*
We return to the beach house in sand-slappy flip-flops and oil-slathered skin, two middle school gigglers in too-small bikinis. The shower is big enough for both of us, no waiting. Together my friend and I surrender to the soapy stream, shielded by dappled glass panels that conceal all but our shapes. Till her stepfather enters and tosses a live lobster in with us. Falling, scrambling, the creature touches what this man cannot: tender breasts, and lower still, hair. Our squeals are no match for his laughter. Or the lobster, unwitting and unwilling, but still grasping.
