Honeymoon Suite

The trip came two years late. Beaches, sand, romance. Looking back, there was no promise of sunshine in the “Valley Isle” in February.

It rained. Poured in fact. One-lane roads washed out. Dirt roads became mud holes. A familiar pattern emerged.

About the same time each day, all travel led to a local hangout, Blackie’s Bar. We stopped in.

One after another the locals repeated, I’ve never seen it rain like this before. Upon hearing our story, they toasted us newlyweds drinking from shot glasses inscribed, Every time I see you, you’re in a bar.

After a while, we bought our souvenir and headed back to the hotel.

A resident of Alaska since 1981, Bonnie J Scherer writes her poetry by the light of day during the bleak winter months. Once she discovered the joy of writing Japanese style poetry a few years ago, she was hooked. It has been her honor to have haiga, haiku, senryu, tanka, haibun, and more published in venues and platforms throughout the world. Cheers to the light!
