He shows me shrapnel pockmarks marring his upper back. A botched spinal surgery crawls below it leading to a keloid courtesy of a messier knife encounter. The only natural marks line his legs—a tussle lost to a bramble bush as a boy. He crashes on my couch for the night, and I note his other scars.
