Memory Box

 

I sip a lemonade on the patio, exhausted from purging another room full of odds and ends collected over the years. Some of it is mine; some of it was his. A lone monarch flits to-and-fro before settling on the milkweed.

a spring breeze
rustles his favorite tree

I sort through the books next—Thoreau, a book on prime numbers, his collection of Shakespeare’s works—and pause at the unfilled baby album.

By evening, my car is filled with memories I’ll pass on to someone at Goodwill.

Venus rises alone
against the vast expanse
